Sometimes back, I was walking on the departure hall of Chennai International Airport, after a short vacation. My mind started pushing the fun during the holidays into oblivion and shining up the memories of the business adversities in front of us like dwindling demands, swelling supplies and the tough global economic situation. With these thoughts I was just passing by a cute bronze statue of God Nataraj in the same departure hall. I realized that statue of God Nataraj has been trying to symbolically convey some thing. After getting nearer to the statue I had a pensive look at it.
He is dancing in a background of a fire ring, standing on a dwarf man’s body, which is very much like an unstable cylindrical roller (can be seen in the picture). Threatening venomous snakes dance on one of his right hands, left leg and below the right leg on the dwarf etc. From the surrounding fire he has pulled out a piece of fire and holds it in his left hand, to counter the threats from the snakes. With this he has made the threats to dance to his tunes. He holds a drum (damroo) in one of his right hands that creates symphonic rhythm. It is amazing to note that in spite of the blazing background, threats from the snakes, the pain from the fire in his left hand and the unstable base on which he stands, God Nataraj can beguile everyone with his nimble footed dance, articulated by the enchanting rhythm from the drum (damroo). It is not only a cosmic dance, as it is religiously known. It must also be a dance showing his Core Competency in managing adversities.
I feel, the Management Message from God Nataraj is that we should develop Core Competency to maintain business stability in an unstable tough business environment, to strategically counter the threats of the business using the situational adversity as weapon i.e. to convert adversity into our advantage and to enthuse the Stake Holders of our business, unmindful of the adversity.
